This is a workshop about the role of advisors, allies, and support workers in the self-advocacy movement. A central theme is that self-advocacy is a civil rights movement:
- A struggle for people with developmental disabilities to be treated just like everyone else.
- A struggle for freedom, equality and justice for people with developmental disabilities.
We need to learn from how white people are allies to African-Americans in their struggle for civil rights and how straight people are allies to gay and lesbians in their struggle for civil rights. We all have a lot to learn from each other and we don’t think any of us are experts. We are in a constant learning experience together.
