This curriculum includes more than 8 hours of training activities proven effective at recognizing and challenging everyday misconceptions about disability.  These training activities have been successfully used in Vermont with agency staff who support people with developmental disabilities.

Curriculum Goals:

  • Identify false ideas about people with disabilities and how they affect their lives.
    • Practice responding to these false ideas when it affects the work we do and the people we support.
    • Figure out ways to support self-advocacy and empower people with disabilities to speak up for themselves and change the way society views them.
    • Identify best practices for people with developmental disabilities to actively participate in hiring, training and evaluating support workers.

Practice answering and asking questions in a way that supports people with developmental disabilities to make their own decisions.
